Michael Gianunzio joined SMUD in 2008 as the Chief Legislative and Regulatory Affairs Officer.
He is responsible for management and coordination of all legislative matters and regulatory requirements affecting SMUD at the state and federal level. Gianunzio also serves as the SMUD Reliability Compliance Officer, responsible for implementation and compliance with all FERC-NERC reliability compliance standards and requirements. He is a member of the CEO’s Executive Team.
Prior to joining SMUD, Mr. Gianunzio was the General Counsel and Chief Legal Officer of the Snohomish County Public Utility District in Everett, Wash., from 1995-2008, serving as Acting General Manager/CEO in 2002. Gianunzio received national and international recognition for his leadership role in uncovering tape recordings and documents of fraud and market manipulation by Enron power traders during the Western energy crisis in 2000-01 as part of a multi-year case against Enron for Snohomish PUD.
Mr. Gianunzio was the managing partner in the Colorado Springs law firm of Anderson Johnson & Gianunzio from 1982-1995, representing public utilities and school districts.
Before private practice in Colorado, he was a corporate litigation attorney for six years with Bayer Corp. and Coastal Energy Corp.
Mr. Gianunzio received a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from the University of Michigan (1973) and a Juris Doctor from the University of Notre Dame (1976). He is a member of the bars of the States of Washington, Colorado, Indiana and Wisconsin, and is rated “av”, the highest rating by peer review of legal ability and ethical standards conducted by the Martindale-Hubble Co. He has been very active in Washington state and California in community college foundations that raise scholarship funds for needy students. In his spare time, he is a winemaker and artist.
