"The road to energy independence, economic recovery and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions runs through the Building Sector."
-Edward Mazria
In this election year, we are hearing from both candidates on the importance of energy independence. Each candidate offers a different solution-John McCain says "drill baby drill" with a marked increase in off shore and wilderness drilling. Barak Obama is pushing an increase in sustainable resources like wind and solar energy. Neither plan could by itself provide meaningful results. According to the Energy Information Administration projections, America will consume 118 Quadrillion Btu of energy in 2030. America's propose "Bold Energy Plan" which includes 45 nuclear plants and off shore drilling would supply 3% of the needed 118 QBtu! The 2030 Blueprint from Architecture 2030, "offers a three-pronged solution centered on building energy efficiency, homeowner choices and renewable energy, would supply as much as 37% of America's total energy consumption, replace 100% of its fossil-fuel-generated electricity and reduce its imported oil by as much as 89%."
Buildings are responsible for the consumption of 70% of the electricity in America! Meaningful reduction of heating, cooling, and lighting demand in our structures could have a much bigger impact on energy independence than windtricity, solar power, off shore drilling, and nuclear plants combined! Since windows are the largest per capita losers of energy of any envelope component, a new generation of insulated windows could and should play an important role in any energy efficiency plan. Billions of dollar are being spent on products with little to no payback because decision makers want to do something and do not understand the real cost versus the benefit of their purchase. We can make a difference in this environment by forcing politicans and decision makers to make much more effort on the demand side of the equation and there will be many winners for that effort.
