Structure enables ERCOT Retailer, Direct Energy, to expand portfolio of services

Direct Energy, one of the largest energy service providers in North America, announces the successful implementation of their new generation management system (GMS) supporting direct communication between ERCOT and Direct Energy generation resources. Structure led the successful implementation and launch of the OSI Monarch Energy Management and Market Operation Systems for Direct Energy. The new system will allow Direct Energy to effectively monitor and optimize the operations of its generation assets while also obtaining the capability to provide a third party service to submit bids and offers on behalf of resource entities or load serving entries.

“The investment in the new generation management system is a direct investment in our customer-focused growth platform and a major part of our midstream and trading business transformation,” said Badar Khan, President of Direct Energy Upstream. “The new GMS enables us to offer a full-range of energy management services to customers from optimizing power generation assets to managing full requirements load and offering value-added reporting and forecasting services.”

Direct Energy owns and operates over 1,200 Megawatts (MW) of generation resources in Texas as well as the output of multiple wind farms through power purchase agreements. In February, Direct Energy successfully cutover to the newly installed OSI Monarch GMS solution that provides Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), ERCOT market interfaces, ICCP data communications, automatic generation control (AGC), economic dispatch, and disaster recovery/emergency backup functionality for remote site operations.

Structure led the system selection, requirements gathering and fast tracked the system implementation in a compressed timeframe to meet Direct Energy’s goals. “Structure’s project management approach and vast experience with GMS implementations was instrumental in our success. Their knowledge of the vendor products allowed the system to be operational within six months of contract award,” commented David Hindman, Head of ERCOT Desk at Direct Energy. “Structure was an invaluable partner in this strategic initiative from beginning to end to complete this project.”

“Structure is honored to have been able to work with Direct Energy on this critical system implementation,” said Stacey Wood, Structure Partner. “Our experience implementing real time systems allowed Structure to efficiently and effectively guide Direct Energy through the implementation of this critical system.”
